Density

Concept Explanation

Density

Density of solid is high. It is defined as mass per unit volume of a substance. Density = mass/ volume. Due to strong intermolecular force, the particles of a solid are very closely packed together into a small space or volume. That is why the density of a solid is high.

Density: the density of liquids is lower than that of solids.

Ice floats on the surface of water because Ice is lighter than water as it is less dense than water. When water freezes into its solid form, its molecules are able to form more stable hydrogen bonds.
